Lesson 10: Creating a Final Report

Objective: The students will write a rough draft of a computer-generated report about Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. They will use the information presented in the technology unit on Harry Potter.

Materials: 1 word processor/student if available, 1 copy of Harry Potter book for reference, class notes

Anticipatory Set: Writing a computer-generated report from notes and literature discussed in class will enable the student to become competent in a variety of areas such as writing papers based on notes taken, word-processing, and practicing report formatting which will help in secondary education classes.

Pre-skill: The students have already learned how to format a short written paper (3 paragraphs-introduction, body, and conclusion)

Model: The teacher will review all the materials written down and word-processed so far on the Harry Potter unit. The teacher will demonstrate how to incorporate notes and information already word-processed into organized sentences for a starter paragraph in the report.

Lead: The teacher will walk around the room and help the students formulate an opening paragraph. (This does not have to be long. It simply has to have a theme and include information discussed in class.)

Test: The students will word process their introductory paragraph and share it with a classmate for proofing. After the paper has been edited for corrections, the students will turn the paragraph in. The above Model-Lead-Test format is repeated for the entire rough draft of the short report. (It is understood that this assignment will take quite a while to complete. The teacher will encourage the students to continue to turn things in for editing and revision as this is very important to learning editing and report-writing skills.)

Evaluation: The end product for this particular assignment is for the student to turn in a completed rough draft to the teacher for editing. In the very end, which could be a matter of weeks, the student will turn in a final d raft of the report.
