Lesson 2: Vocabulary and Mental Models

Objective: The students will review the meaning of vocabulary via a PowerPoint presentation of new vocabulary words from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Students will use new vocabulary in sentences.

Anticipatory Set: Learning new vocabulary is essential to being an effective reader and writer. By learning this vocabulary, the students will not only understand the story better but they will also have a broader span of knowledge with which to write a computer-generated report.

Pre-skill: Students have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone .

Materials:

Delivering Instruction/ Model and Lead: Procedures

Guided Practice/ Lead and Test:

Independent Practice/ Test:

Formative Evaluation: First, the teacher will monitor the students’ answers during the guided practice activity. Then, the teacher will go around and check to make sure that the pairs are using the new words in the correct context of their sentences. The students will be evaluated on their participation in the activity and their understanding of the new vocabulary words as demonstrated by the use of them in sentences.

Extension Activity: 1- Students can record each sentence and definition. 2-The students will save their new vocabulary lists as well as the sentence list compiled by the students in order to use later in the project. For example, the students could use these new words in any of the sentence writing activities and/or the computer-generated report.(Although this is listed as an extension activity, it is suggested that the teacher will make this a mandatory part of the unit.)

Accommodations: Students with visual difficulties will be allowed to sit closer to the monitor to see the presentation. The students will be given written as well as oral directions. The students who have weaker writing and vocabulary comprehension skills will be paired with students who have stronger skills. For students with severe writing difficulties, the teacher will allow the students to record their words and sentences onto a tape recorder and allow the tape to be saved in their unit folder. Alternative programs may be used instead of PowerPoint: Hyperstudio with Blabbermouth will provide speech feedback for the text or Buildability from Don Johnston will read all text the students type.
