Lesson 3: Researching Literature and Word Processing

Objective: Using the Web (Trackstar) and writing software, students will answer vocabulary and literature questions related to the book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Anticipatory Set: This activity will help the students in collecting and organizing relevant information in order to construct a product such as a computer-generated report.

Pre-skill:

Materials: computer (1 per student if available), access to the internet, 1 copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone per student (for reference)

Delivering Instruction/Model and Lead:

Guided Practice/ Lead & Test:

Independent Practice:

Formative Evaluation:

The teacher will assess the completed document. Criteria: The teacher will check the document for at least an 80% accuracy rate. If the student does not achieve this accuracy rate, the teacher will review material from the book and from the web sites to help the student to achieve higher accuracy. The teacher will make sure that the student can copy and paste correctly from the web.

Extension Activity: Have the students refer back to Trackstar, this time to another Harry Potter web activity*. Ask the students to look over some web sites and to copy and paste some of their favorite pictures or quotes to a MS Word document.

*Trackstar #18191, for example

Accommodations: The students will be given written as well as oral directions for the activity. A program that reads on-screen text, such as Cast eReader or WeMedia for example, will be used for students who have trouble reading. Students who need visual aids will have their computers adjusted to create a larger font.
