Lesson 5: Organizing and Outlining using Inspiration

Objective: The student will write 3-4 paragraphs on one element of literature from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone such as characters, settings, and plot using a text organizer (outline).

Anticipatory Set: This activity will help the students in collecting and organizing relevant information to complete a computer-generated report. It also helps students to identify elements of literature, which is important to be a proficient reader.

Pre-skill: Students have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone; Students have written well-formed sentences in the Imagination Express activity; Students have completed various activities on the book and also reviewed the book thoroughly.

Materials: Copy of the Harry Potter book (1/student if available); student notes; computer with Inspiration software program to make organizer and screen/monitor for students to see; copy of organizer (when completed); blank paper

Part 1-Model/Delivering Instruction: The teacher will introduce the activity by presenting the main point of the organizer "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Paper", and by asking the students what they think of when they think of the book. The teacher will give an example, Harry, and make a category of "Characters" with which to place Harry.

Lead/Guided Practice: The teacher along with the students will brainstorm ideas and the teacher will put them into the organizer under element headings such as plot, characters, and setting. (see Organizer, Appendix C)

Independent Practice/Lead & Test: After the initial brainstorming and upon completion of the organizer, the teacher will give a copy of the organizer to each student. The teacher will explain that the students are to write 3-4 paragraphs using the book, their notes, and the new organizer, on one element of the story.

Assessment: The teacher will monitor the students and provide any help that is warranted. This activity will probably take more than one class period to finish. Because this activity is a warm-up for writing the final project report, the teacher will not only help the students to generate these small paragraphs but will provide positive feedback to encourage the students to write well.

Accommodations: When presenting the organizer to the students, the teacher will zoom to at least 150% for the students with visual impairments. The students will be given written as well as oral directions for the activity. The teacher will provide several pre-made organizers for students who have a hard time focusing on the brainstorming and presentation of ideas.

Extension Activity: When it is time for the students to generate their reports, the teacher will provide a blank organizer to help the students organize their report information. For the more advanced students, the teacher will help them to input information into their own personal organizer generated with Inspiration.
