Lesson 9: Structured Searching on the Web using TrackStar

 

Objective: The students will locate and utilize desired information from the Internet through Trackstar to incorporate into a computer-generated report.

Materials: 1 computer w/ access to the World Wide Web/ student if available-access to Trackstar #66350 http://trackstar.hprtec.org/main/display.php3?trackid=66350 , 1 copy Harry Potter book for reference

Anticipatory Set: Locating information on the Internet, in structured activities like Trackstar, can be a very useful resource for young students.

Model: Present content-The teacher will introduce the activity by showing students how to get into Trackstar and how to link to each site. The teacher will give each student a worksheet that has all the questions from the Trackstar site so that they may fill it out.

Lead: The teacher will guide the students in answering the questions from the Trackstar activity. If the students choose to do the activity directly in a MS word document, the teacher will show the students how to minimize the Trackstar activity and fill in the answers in MS word.

Test: The students will finish the activity without the teacher. Upon completion of the worksheet, the students will hand the sheet in to the teacher. (handwritten or typed and printed out)

Evaluation: The teacher will assess the completed document for accuracy of question answers, not necessarily grammar. The students will be expected to use this lesson to help them write a computer-generated report.

Accommodations: Students who are visually impaired will have their screens adjusted to create a larger font. A program that reads on-screen text will be used for students who have trouble reading.
