I teach social foundations and qualitative research at the University of South Carolina and am also on the faculty at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. For over 20 years I have studied race and education and have written oral histories and taken photographs to document childhood, diversity and disparity. Most recently my concentration has been on an oral history project with South African teachers who fought apartheid. I have written articles from this project that have been published in South Africa, England, and the United States as well as a book, Voices from Cape Town Classrooms: Oral Histories of Teachers Who Fought Apartheid. My work with still photography began when I followed around my doctoral advisor Bernie Mehl as he shot pictures at flea markets and in the streets and alleys of Columbus, Ohio. I started doing the same kind of photography as well as shooting my own kids Nathan and Joel. This work quickly expanded to their friends and to kids everywhere -- in parks, at schools, at camps and on the street. I have set this page up to share my oral histories and photographic work. I welcome the use of my photographs by others. If your work is non-profit all I ask is that you credit my work and send me copies of how you've used it. If your work is commercial please contact me about possible charitable donations. Alan Wieder Select from the following photo essays and other stuff: Auschwitz-Birkenbau/World Cup 2006
